We all have dark moments, those moments when you feel deflated or down, things are just too hard. More often than not it is our perception of a situation that provokes such a feeling.
When we change our perception we change the way we feel.
Recently I was given the honour of reading the following passage at my best friend’s wedding…
Our Greatest Fear —Marianne Williamson
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of the world.
You’re playing small does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
Whilst I’d read this many times before and have discussed the very concept of the being liberated by our own fears and learning to grow within the darkness, this passage still moves me every time. Marianne brings to life the aspect of understanding what our true fears really are.
Certainly for me part of Marianne’s view is true. For years I kept doing what I was doing out of “fear” of reaching my true potential. We even do this in Yoga, or other physical challenges.
Surely you have been encouraged to try a pose or a transition and thought “that’s not possible….OH SHIT I DID IT!!” The power of our light, our potential can be truly inspiring.
Lately, whilst facing another dark moment, I found myself again pondering these words. My own abilities, my inner light and came I to a new perception…
OUR DARKNESS IS FULL OF LIGHT!!!
For when we dive into these dark moments, we don’t change only our view but our view of the situation changes. We are still able to achieve all that we can when are in full light. Maybe it’s actually our ability to move through the darkness and into the light that makes us stronger.
Sure dark moments are horrible, challenging, scary and at times feel endless. If we take a moment to find stillness and sit within the darkness, to compose our thoughts and SEE what this darkness is really about. Then we have the opportunity to change that which brings on the darkness within us. Our light and our darkness is within in us, it is our own choice to see, to respond, to feel and to change.
By all means this is hard to do. Be willing to talk to someone about it. Find a friend, a family member, colleague or Yoga Teacher that is willing to listen (we love listening). They will help you see the light within the Darkness and support you.
Great things come from withstanding pressures, challenges and adverse realities. Take Diamonds for instance, they are formed via the process of perturbation…constant pressure over a long period of time in the darkness deep below the earth’s surface, to be brought up and to shine light in the world.
Next time you feel the darkness upon you maybe try and see the light within the darkness. Talk to someone, share your feelings. See the growth that may come of this challenge. The potential your fearing. Then choose to grow towards your light, your power, your true self.
Light Love and Peace.
